The Bear presents PURPOSE: stories from the non-profit world

I realized then that even though I was a tiny speck in an infinite cosmos, a blip on the timeline of eternity, I was not without purpose.

We invited people to share with us, “Why they work?”, — surprisingly it has nothing to do with money.

Here is a bit more about the storytellers.

A jewelry designer goes back to her home country to begin a for profit adventure when a natural disaster changes her life; a bored historian’s life changes when she leaves a dusty archive to speak directly to the people on the pages; a social worker comforts a crying refugee with a hug - did he cross the line?; the memory of a 9-year old boy clinging to her leg, won’t let this woman go back to her everyday life again; a normal workday ends in tragedy that reawakens one man’s sense of life and work purpose; everyone told her: not here, not possible, no one can change the dire lives of these children, but she did.

International film premiere: The Surfer and the Birds.

In December 2018, Bear Storyteller Ben McGuire told the gripping story of a courageous young Australian surfer who risked his life to rescue Ben’s drowning mother.  The Bear proudly presents our first international film premiere as Ben returns to the stage in March to present his new short film, inspired by those incredible events.

Back by popular demand - singer, songwriter, musician Teresa Seabird accompanies the evening. Here’s a sampling of her musical magic below. Show host and Bear founder, Dyane Neiman charms listeners with her lively audience interaction.

“The Bear was just magical last night. Thank you again for making it happen.“ Layne Moser, first time at The Bear in February 2019
